March 19th, 2011, the supermoon will rise in the night sky for all to witness. What’s a supermoon?
In case you haven’t been following all the buzz about this phenomenom, the full moon will be just shy of 17,500 miles closer to Earth than its average distance. This means it will appear larger. According to the EarthSky science blog, “no moon will be this close to Earth again until November 14, 2016.”
Cool – but what does this really mean for outdoor enthusisasts? Think moonlight ski or snowshoe trek or outdoor skating party – even brighter than norm. Better yet, book a backcountry cabin and gather a group of friends to enjoy the full moon nightlife!

Unfortunately we’re out of town tomorrow, but I’m thinking we can probably still manage a moonlight skate or walk followed by a chocolate fondue!
How about you, any plans to get out and enjoy the supermoon tomorrow night?
Tips for a terrific moonlight ski or snowshoe trek:
- Load your pack with the ten basics for backcountry travel – although feel free to leave the sunhat and sunglasses at home!
- Always carry a headlamp with spare batteries – it can get dark fast if thick clouds descend.
- Besides extra warm layers, carry a thermos with a warm drink.
- Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.
- Choose a trail that matches the ability of the weakest member of your group.
- Stay together.
